How do I order books and journals from American Psychiatric Association Publishing?

How long will it take to receive my order?

Book orders will arrive in 5-10 business days. A shipping confirmation will be sent to your email address when your order is shipped. For journal subscriptions, the first issue will arrive at the beginning of the month corresponding to the journal's issue date. Back issues will arrive in 3-5 weeks. Please allow an extra 2 weeks for international destinations.

How can I get a copy of an invoice?

Does American Psychiatric Association Publishing accept purchase orders?

APA Publishing accepts purchase orders for subscriptions and book orders from institutions, hospitals, universities, government agencies and school districts. Unfortunately, we cannot accept purchase orders from individuals, APA members, and authors. We do not accept purchase orders for less than $250. Orders below $250 must be prepaid by check or credit card.

For orders requiring pre-payment, we can send a pro forma invoice based on your purchase order information. Pro forma invoices must be paid in full before the order will be shipped.

A valid purchase order must be an original document with the following information:

  1. Company Name
  2. Purchase order number
  3. Bill to and Ship to addresses
  4. Quantity, item numbers and descriptions
  5. Price (prices can be obtained by visiting www.appi.org or by calling 1-800-368- 5777)
  6. Shipping instructions. Customers have the option of using your own freight company.
  7. If not using your freight company, please add 9.5% of order total for shipping and handling. Shipping and handling applies to book orders, not subscriptions.

How can I change the address for my journal subscription?

You can login to your account to update this information. You can also email Customer Service. Please provide your old and new address in your request.

How will my order be shipped?

Standard shipping is via UPS ground. We require a street address to ship your order and cannot ship to PO boxes or APO addresses. Please contact Customer Service for next day delivery information and pricing. Your order should arrive within 5 business days after it has shipped from our warehouse.

How do I know if my order was accepted?

If the confirmation page appears on the site after you place your order, then your order has been received by us. You will also receive a confirmation email after placing your order online.

How do I know if a book is currently in stock?

Unless otherwise noted all titles are in stock and will be available for shipping as soon as the order is received. If a title is listed as 'Coming Soon' on the top of the page, it has not yet been published. However, you can place an order for this title and it will be shipped as soon as it becomes available.

What payment methods does American Psychiatric Association Publishing accept?

How do I access my online journals, subscriptions, and CME?

Login with your username and password at PsychiatryOnline.org. Note that passwords are case sensitive.

Are current American Psychiatric Association (APA) members entitled to a discount?

If you are an American Psychiatric Association (APA) member, you are entitled to a 20% discount on all book orders. APA Resident-Fellow Members are entitled to a 25% discount on all book orders. The pricing for journal and PsychiatryOnline.org subscriptions already reflects a special discount price so no additional APA Member and APA Resident-Fellow Member discounts will be applied to subscriptions. Your discount will automatically be applied when you order on our website. Learn more about becoming an APA member.

Are bulk quantity discounts offered?

eBooks Questions

We are working to improve our eBooks experience to better serve you. Unfortunately, due to the transition, eBooks will be unavailable for the month of August. eBooks will not be available for access or purchase until September 2018. We regret any inconvenience.

Purchasing issues
What if I accidentally lose the page that contains the link to my eBook, before downloading?

Your confirmation e-mail includes a link to your eBook download. If you cannot find your confirmation e-mail, please check your spam folder. You can also retrieve the link by going to My Account and clicking on the order number under Order History. You may also contact psychiatryonline@psych.org to request a new download link.

I downloaded my eBook but I can't find it now.

Your eBook should automatically open in Adobe Digital Editions. Once you have closed Adobe Digital Editions, the eBook can be found by simply opening Adobe Digital Editions and checking the Library section. You can also locate the file in the default download directory on your computer. The default location in Windows is the 'Digital Editions' folder in 'My Documents.' In Mac OS, the default location is the 'Digital Editions' folder in 'Documents.' If you have downloaded an EPUB file, you can search for recently added files with the file extension ".epub." PDF files have the extension ".pdf."

To read an eBook on multiple devices (such as my laptop and my smartphone), do I need to purchase multiple copies?

No. You only need one copy of an eBook at a time, as each eBook that you purchase can be used on up to 6 devices. Adobe Digital Editions includes instructions for authorizing each of your devices and transferring your eBooks onto them.

Are all American Psychiatric Association Publishing titles available as eBooks?

Almost all new APA Publishing titles are released in both print and eBook formats. We also offer an expanding list of backlist titles as eBooks. See our eBooks page to find a particular eBook title. If there is an APA Publishing book you would like to see as an eBook that isn’t currently in that format, please contact us at psychiatryonline@psych.org and let us know.

Do I have to pay sales tax on eBooks?

APA Publishing charges a 5.75% sales tax on all orders from Washington, DC.

Can I order eBooks by phone or mail?

Currently, APA Publishing eBooks can only be ordered online.

Can I pay for an eBook with a check?

No. eBooks can only be purchased with a credit or debit card at this time.

What is the return policy for eBooks?

We are unable to accept returns or offer refunds on completed, downloaded eBook purchases. Before completing your eBook transaction, please take care to ensure you have purchased the correct format and title and that your e-reader is compatible (remember, Kindles are not able to read our eBooks). We encourage you to activate Adobe Digital Editions and test your software and system configurations by downloading a free sample eBook before making your first purchase. If you have concerns about your purchase, please contact psychiatryonline@psych.org.

Are eBooks available for purchase by institutions?

No. eBooks are only available for individual purchase and not for use at institutions.


Adobe Digital Editions
What is Adobe Digital Editions?

Adobe Digital Editions is a free software program used to view and manage eBooks. You will need to download Adobe Digital Editions in order to purchase and download eBooks from APA Publishing and transfer eBooks from your computer to other devices. You can use Adobe Digital Editions to manage eBooks from sources other than APA Publishing, and to organize all of your eBooks into a custom library. Before installing Adobe Digital Editions, please check that your system meets the Adobe Digital Editions system requirements.

I'm having trouble with Adobe Digital Editions.

If you see a "resume pending tasks" or "error getting license" message while using Adobe Digital Editions, simply click "ok" and you will be able view your eBook. If your problem concerns downloading or opening Adobe Digital Editions, please contact Digital Editions Help.

How do I use Adobe Digital Editions with screen reading technology?

Adobe Digital Editions is designed to work with assistive technologies on Mac and Windows. You must separately install/enable these applications. Installation instructions can be found on the respective web sites (JAWS, NVDA, or Window-Eyes on Windows and VoiceOver on Mac). Version 2.0 was designed with support for full keyboard controls (tab navigation and shortcuts), improved text enlargement, and support for high-contrast modes. Shortcuts are listed in the Getting Started eBook that is installed along with the Adobe Digital Editions.

How do I know if I can read eBooks downloaded from appi.org on my device?

APA Publishing eBooks can be read on any device that supports the eBook format you purchase (either EPUB or PDF) and that is supported by Adobe Digital Editions. You can purchase and download your eBook directly to the device if it includes a web browser and Adobe Digital Editions. Or, you may transfer the eBook to a supported device from a computer with Adobe Digital Editions installed. EBooks ordered on appi.org are compatible with most eReaders.

iPad and iPhone phone users can order directly from appi.org. After downloading Adobe Digital Editions on your computer and purchasing your eBook, you'll need to download the free Bluefire eReader application to your device. For instructions, please see our Bluefire step-by-step guide. You may also order from the Apple iBookstore.

Kindles use proprietary software, and will only display eBooks purchased directly from Amazon. APA Publishing eBooks are not available through Amazon at this time. Android users, please check to see if the e-reader on your device is supported by Adobe Digital Editions.

Sony users can either download Adobe Digital Editions and use it to manage your eBooks, or use the software that came with your Sony reader. If you use your Sony software and don't download Adobe Digital Editions, when you click on your download link at the end of the ordering process, your eBook should automatically open in your Sony software.

Nook users can order directly from appi.org, using Adobe Digital Editions to manage and transfer your eBook. You may also order on barnesandnoble.com.

Kobo users can order directly from appi.org, using Adobe Digital Editions to manage and transfer your eBook. You may also order on kobobooks.com.


eBook formats
What eBook formats does American Psychiatric Association Publishing use?

Most of our eBooks are offered in EPUB format, a widely supported, reflowable format that allows you to change the font size for easy reading. For several of our titles, for which the preservation of the exact look of the print book is important, the title is offered in PDF format, a fixed format that looks just like the printed book.

How long does it take to download an eBook?

The download time depends on the size of the eBook you order and the speed of your internet connection. Download times generally vary between 2 seconds and 2 minutes.

I have a Kindle or Kindle Touch or Kindle Fire. Can I read eBooks purchased directly from appi.org on this device?

No. Kindles use proprietary software, and will only display eBooks purchased directly from Amazon. APA Publishing eBooks are not available through Amazon at this time.

I have an iPad or iPhone. Can I read eBooks purchased directly from appi.org on this device?

Yes. iPad and iPhone users can order directly from appi.org. After downloading Adobe Digital Editions on your computer and purchasing your eBook, you'll need to download the free Bluefire eReader application to your device. For instructions, please see our iPad/iPhone guide.

Can I read eBooks on my Mac?

Yes. Adobe Digital Editions is available for the Mac. Currently, Adobe Digital Editions only works on Mac OS 10.5 or later.

What rights do I have regarding my eBook purchase?

APA Publishing eBooks come with certain restrictions (also known as DRM or Digital Rights Management) for the protection of copyrights. When you purchase and download an eBook directly from APA Publishing, you have the right to:
  • Download the eBook 4 times (with the same Adobe ID).
  • Access the entire book with no expiration date.
  • Read the eBook on up to 6 devices.

Can I print out my eBook?

No portion of APA Publishing eBooks can be printed or copied.

Can I share an eBook that I've ordered?

APA Publishing eBooks cannot be sent to another user due to copyright restrictions.

I'm having trouble with my e-reader device.
