Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV® Axis I Disorders (SCID-I), Clinician Version

This efficient, user-friendly instrument will help clinicians make standardized, reliable, and accurate diagnoses and avoid the common problem of “premature closure”—the premature focus on one diagnostic possibility. It will also help clinicians of all levels of experience improve their clinical assessment and interviewing techniques and provides extensive documentation of the diagnostic process, an essential procedure in today’s managed care world. Specifically adapted from the research standard for Axis I structured clinical interviewing for use in clinical settings, the SCID-I covers those DSM-IV diagnoses most commonly seen by clinicians and includes the diagnostic criteria for these disorders with corresponding interview questions. The SCID-I is divided into six self-contained modules that can be administered in sequence: mood episodes; psychotic symptoms; psychotic disorders; mood disorders; substance use disorders; and anxiety, adjustment, and other disorders

Reviews

"Dr. First is a pioneer in helping the busy clinician perform the most efficient and accurate clinical interview. This is crucial since the right diagnosis is a necessary first step for optimal treatment planning. This book is a must for every practitioner."—Allen Frances, M.D., Professor and Chair, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina

"If you are already using structured approaches to diagnosis or would want to see what this 60 to 90-minute interview can do for your practice, or if you are teaching or learning to apply DSM-IV in the clinic, this is a must read. The SCID-I saves time, ensures a thorough review, is easy to use, and provides all the needed documentation, while improving diagnostic accuracy."—A. John Rush, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, Dallas, Texas

"The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders is a user-friendly guide to learning how to probe for and rate the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria. The role-plays and homework cases included in the training materials bring the criteria to life. Mental health professionals will find themselves approaching the task of making DSM-IV diagnoses with greater confidence, accuracy, and understanding."—Nancee Blum, M.S.W., L.I.S.W., Social Work Specialist, University of Iowa Department of Psychiatry, Iowa City, Iowa
