Ethnic Minority Elderly
A Task Force Report of the American Psychiatric Association

In response to the growing concern for mentally ill minority elders, the Task Force on Ethnic Minority Elderly was established in 1988. Since then, this task force has studied the needs of the elderly population and analyzed the existing service models designed to meet those needs.

This Task Force Report presents research on the psychiatric care of African American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Pacific and Asian American elders. The report not only addresses the vast issues confronting ethnic minority elderly, but it also makes a series of recommendations for action at the federal, state, local, and psychiatric community levels.

Reviews

"With the publication of this volume, the APA Task Force on Ethnic Minority Elderly has provided investigators, clinicians, and educators with a review of the current state of knowledge regarding these diverse groups. The work is an indispensable guide to charting the future course of research and to designing health and mental health care systems that can be effective."—Edward F. Foulks, M.D., PhD, Sellars-Polchow Professor of Psychiatry, Tulane University, Associate Chief of Staff for Education, New Orleans VA Medical Center

"This volume is recommended as mandatory reading for anyone interested in the elderly and should be incorporated into general psychiatric residency programs as well, since such insights have applicability to younger minority counterparts."—The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease
