American Psychiatric Publishing (APP), is a division of the American Psychiatric Association. Its purpose is twofold: to serve as the distributor of publications of the Association and to publish books independent of the policies and procedures of the American Psychiatric Association. APP has grown since its founding in 1981 into a full-service publishing house, including a staff of editorial, production, marketing, and business experts devoted to publishing for the field of psychiatry and mental health.
Under the direction of Robert E. Hales, M.D., and John McDuffie, editorial acquisition and development have the highest priority at APP. APP is unique in the extent to which it uses peer review in both the selection and final approval of publishing projects. Proposals are reviewed and developed at the earliest stages by an Editorial Board that brings psychiatric expertise from a diverse spectrum of psychiatry. Full manuscripts are then peer-reviewed in their entirety, with final acceptance of the manuscript dependent on appropriate response to the peer reviews. Each year more than 200 projects are reviewed, and fewer than 30 are accepted in the typical year.
Marketing activities start soon after acceptance of the project and begin in earnest once the final manuscript has been accepted for publication. APP mails promotional material to all APA members and previous buyers at least twice each month and attends more than 10 psychiatric meetings and conferences each year, making its marketing efforts the most thorough of any in the field of psychiatry. APP also sends review copies to all major psychiatric journals and any publications appropriate for a particular title. APP books have been reviewed in all major psychiatric journals as well as the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA.
Production uses the latest technology for editing, typesetting, design, and printing publications. Nine months lead time from final manuscript to official publication is optimal to ensure that all marketing opportunities are realized, but APP maintains its ability to be flexible in scheduling time-sensitive products.
Customer service is a high priority at APP. Orders and queries come to us by phone (800 number), fax, e-mail, and regular mail, as well as via our web site. Orders are processed at our headquarters in Arlington, VA, and shipped from our warehouse in Illinois.
